I’ve been a long time lover of TRESemme shampoo and conditioner, it comes in a supersize bottle at a reasonable price, and I find the conditioner one of the only ones that get through my super long knotty hair. However when Jonathan Van Ness came strutting onto our screens in Queer Eye, with his long luscious locks, the one piece of advice he gave to every guy was to cut out the nasties in their shampoo and go sulfate free. So I started the search for a reasonably priced sulfate-free shampoo.
Through a little research I found a couple of options, L’Oreal Hair Expertise and OGX.
My local supermarket has a really large selection of OGX shampoos which i’d looked at but never really considered what made them so special.
I’m usually a stickler for matching shampoo/conditioner sets, but decided to pick 2 different ones to give them a whirl.
Brazilian Keratin Therapy shampoo
The smell of coconut is gorgeous and isn’t false like some shampoos. I’ve tried shampoo bars in the past and was expecting that given the lack of sulfate in the product it wouldn’t foam as much but this definitely wasn’t the case and I felt I got enough shampoo coverage out of a reasonable amount of product.
Niacin3 + Caffeine conditioner
I was drawn to a couple of things here. Caffeine seems to be an ingredient popping up in a number of beauty products, so I wanted to test the benefits in a hair product. I was also drawn to the blurb that the conditioner helps to “promote a balanced scalp environment” and helps prevent breakage and fallout, both of which I feel I am in need of. The conditioner has a minty smell which I really wasn’t expecting and was slightly tingling on the scalp, it certainly felt fresh and lighter when compared to your average conditioner. I usually slather on a bucket load of conditioner but given the price I wanted to be more frugal with the usage. I didn’t scrimp, but it was by no means my usual multiple handfuls and I actually found that I didn’t need it. I could easily get the tangles out of my hair in the shower without much effort.
My hair felt super clean and didn’t feel weighed down by product residue once dry. I was really impressed with the OGX brand and will definitely be trying some of the other products in the range. I’m a convert, thanks JVN for your words of wisdom, I can’t wait for series 3 to preview…
